An overlooked milestone happening this week…

There is a specific milestone in the life of one very pivotal console that is coming up this week, and I figured it was worth sharing with everyone here at Rising Stuff.

The original Sega Mega Drive (Genesis in North America) was released in Japan on October 29, 1988.

Think about that for a second. It’s been 20 years since the initial launch of one of the most important gaming systems ever created. The Mega Drive was the system that truly put Sega on the map, especially here in the North American market. When ever you hear someone say they remember playing “a Sega”, they are more than likely referring to this console right here.

Makes you feel a bit old when a system you remember playing as a young teenager hits the two decade old mark!

Even to this day, you have dedicated independent developers taking the time and releasing games for this system on actual physical cartridges like Beggar Prince and Legend of Wukong from Super Fighter Team and Pier Solar from Water Melon Development.

So, if you’re playing a few games this week, maybe bust out the old Genesis (or download off the VC) and fire up a game of Sonic or any other great Genesis classic you have fond memories of. It’s worth spending some time and remembering some of the great 16-bit gaming this system had to offer.

Wow, I had no idea. I remember having a great time playing mutant league football, sonic, and other enjoyable games on this system as a kid. For me it’s always been what I think of when I remember playing video games when I was young.

Well looks like it’s old enough to drink in Japan now! Good job Megadrive. ;)

By “overlooked” you mean “covered to excess by the Retronauts podcast,” right!?

A few sites are doing stuff for the Mega Drive’s 20th. Sega-16 is doing a week of coverage.

I just think for a lot of gamers in general, they didn’t realized the system turns 20 this week, which is why I mentioned it as overlooked.

As far as the image goes that I used, I just wanted a nice looking picture of a Mega Drive/Genesis and this one fit the bill. :P

  6. I got Sonic the Hedgehog 2 back in the day around the early 90’s,actually it’s my first video game to play. This game is so fun and easy to play,I always thought Sonic games have the best music, its so addictive. The levels are really fun and have different creative enemies. One thing about this game I didn’t like is the boss(Dr.Robotnick) at the end is hard, the reason it was so hard is that I forgot how to beat him,and he was harder than the first game.

Things in Sonic 2 that improved

1.Sonic has a spin move,he didn’t have it in the first game.
2.The levels are shorter, two levels instead of three levels, its too long with three levels.
3.lives are easier to get,Ive got seven lives on the first level.
4.The bonus levels are more fun than the first game.
5.Tails is in the game and and you can play him with second controller.
6.The enemies are better and more creative

I would recommend this game if you like platform games and have a Sega Genesis,if you don’t already own it.This game is alot better than the first one,but the first one is really good too.Other games that I recommend are Sonic and Knuckles and Sonic 3.
