Game Database

Postby Alex » Tue Jan 19, 2010 6:16 am

Over the next year I am going to start on a project to more effectively catalog and provide information on Japanese games. It's currently in the exploratory state but it's going to be able to do a few things upon release:

1. List every known Japanese game for systems.
2. Allow users to submit games and game information to the system that are not currently in it.
3. Allow users to submit reviews for games.
4. Allow users to show what games are in their collection.
5. Allow users to post useful information and tidbits about games, systems, and system repair.

I recognize there are already a few similar systems out there on the internet, but none of them focus primarily on Japanese games and any that include them tend to be sparse to nonexistent on details about them. Also the review system in the store is pretty lame. This will hopefully allow for a nicer setup. I'm debating whether to base this off of wiki software or if the system will require enough customization to warrant creating it from scratch.

So anyway, please note any features you'd like to see with this here and if I think they're plausible for a first release, I'll add them.

this is a great idea!
i think you could do something similar to the backloggery
people could fill the fields with the name of the game he know, description, review, if he have in his collection, one picture of the game, and maybe some gameplay screenshots
this oblivious would go to proper verification before entering the site database

im willing to help in what i can :D

I think a system like gametz has would work well. I'd say do something like this (these would be links):

Submit Review
Submit Information
Submit Repair Article
etc

Then you'd have a page with a text box for inputting the title, a drop down menu for selecting what console it's for with a text box next to it in case the console isn't listed, a button to press to upload scans/photos/screenshots, and a text box for typing in whatever you want to say. After you hit the submit button it'll go to another page where, if the game isn't in the database, it will show a drop down menu where the user can look through titles that are spelled similarly in case they just mispelled the name or couldn't find it in the database already. If it's not there, they can click a radial button that says "add to database pending approval." So it would then go to you guys for approval.

As more articles get put in the database, a person could just search for whatever they wanted to write about and on the main page for that thing (console or game) there would be links to "write a review" or whtever else could be associated w/ that particular thing.

Basically something similar to both mobygames and gametz.

Well the first thing I'm going to implement for this is a basic wiki structure. From that I can make additions for adding reviews, repair articles, and collection stuffs.

So I'll probably put that up over the next couple of weeks and get it integrated with the forums.

We need something like this for NoBrandCon's Video Game Room, except for all games not just the Japanese ones. Mike and I are looking into catalog database software.

Alright. We now have a functioning wiki! What kind of awesome stuff should we add to it?

I'll eventually release it outside the forums once we get a decent amount of info in it. That will give me a bit of a chance to get the review functionality going first too.
